HOBARTS CABS
Their Last "Stand"
Fifty Years on the Box
Mr. W. Broughton's
Reminiscences
Horse drawn cabs in America to say are unknown In London too they have
been totally displaced by the ubiquitous taxicab motor driven. There are
however, still a few of these old conveyances in use in Hobart as in other
Australian capital cities and some of the reminiscences of the doyen ' of Hobart's
cabmen Mr. W Broughton, make interesting reading. When Mr. Broughton, who has
been connected with the cabs and horse for over 50 years all of which time has
been spent In Hobart, began to earn his living at the tender age of eleven,
trams were unknown here and horse drawn vehicles were the sole means of conveyance
in and about the city while coaches were running on the Main Road between
Hobart and Launceston. To his friends and acquaintances who are legion he is known
as "Dodger”.
