Reminiscences

Horse drawn cabs in America to say are unknown In London too they have been totally displaced by the ubiquitous taxicab motor driven. There are however, still a few of these old conveyances in use in Hobart as in other Australian capital cities and some of the reminiscences of the doyen ' of Hobart's cabmen Mr. W Broughton, make interesting reading. When Mr. Broughton, who has been connected with the cabs and horse for over 50 years all of which time has been spent In Hobart, began to earn his living at the tender age of eleven, trams were unknown here and horse drawn vehicles were the sole means of conveyance in and about the city while coaches were running on the Main Road between Hobart and Launceston. To his friends and acquaintances who are legion he is known as "Dodger”.

1916 Albuera Street School Soccer Team

On 27 July 1916 the Albuera Street and Macquarie Street State-School soccer teams played each other in a rostered soccer match.

The Albuera Street team having players such as: Loone, Ringrose (captain) and Downie.

The referee for the game was Mr J. J. B. Honeysett. The end result of the game was a 2-0 win to Macquarie Street State School.

 

Albuera Turns 100

In July 2014 Albuera Street Primary School celebrates the centenary of the opening of the Albuera Street State School. The original building is on the other side of the street from the current school. The current building was originally built as the infant section at a time when the school also included a secondary section.
